An architecturally restored victorian beauty in the heart of Robertson
-
The Black House is a magical holiday destination for discerning travelers who enjoy style and surprise. The sensory experience begins when you walk into this home decorated with handcrafted wooden pieces, giant chandeliers, cuban washed colours and quirky hand-picked design touches from Europe and Africa. It is built around a large patio with a fireplace and two seating areas, flanked by a plunge pool and a wild creeper-filled garden.
Our Story
Once entered into this old Victorian, you never want to leave. What unfolds behind the entrance is a style statement, yet full of warmth and bonhomie, where any traveler will marvel at creative elegance of the interior design.
This home, transformed from its old Victorian original to an artistic, modern-day Victorian charmer by an acclaimed interior designer, now exudes the finesse of its present owner and hostess, Els, who graciously will make sure your stay is enjoyable and relaxing.
Your Host
The Black House host, Els is a hospitality wizard who has run acclaimed B and B's and still co-owns and manages a boutique hotel in Cape Town. Hailing from Belgium, she combines her strong service ethos and decor flair with warmth and spirit. Robertson is Els' home away from home which means she can recommend walks and experiences to fully immerse yourself in one of South Africa's beautiful wine-growing areas, the Breede River Valley.

We couldn't have wished to find a more beautiful space to spend the weekend with close friends. The interior, decor, furniture, art features & amenities are absolutely incredible. Our first ever stay in the beautiful dorp of Robertson was perfect.
Els was the perfect host and welcomed us with her home stocked up on fresh fruit and a delicious Lemon Meringue Pie. This Victorian home dating to the late 1800's /early 1900's has been meticulously restored. The interior design is an eclectic but harmonious mix of antiques, art deco, Africana and contemporary. Highly recommended and looking foward to going back in Summer.

When I stumbled across the black house, I thought I found a gem – In fact I found two! Els is the perfect host. She welcomed us such warm hearted as if we would’ve known each other for years; she had even prepared several snacks for us. And while she was showing us around, I became more and more speechless. The house is a designer’s dreamland and it’s not... Read this review

I come from Joburg and I thought I knew the Cape well, but in Els' Black House I feel like I have found a new secret treasure. It's one of the most stylish, gorgeous houses I have holidayed in with only the best amenities, luxury linen and towels and special touches everywhere. The mega double shower has to be experienced! Els' house was also homely, relaxed and spacious enough... Read this review
